Common Questions

  • Chiropractors (Doctors of Chiropractic or DCs) primarily care for patients with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, especially back pain, neck pain, and headaches. They use skilled spinal adjustments and other manual techniques to address issues involving muscles, ligaments, joints, and the nervous system.

They also help with a wide range of other problems, including sciatica, whiplash, sports injuries, joint dysfunction, some extremity issues (like shoulder, knee, or wrist pain), and certain headaches or migraines. Many provide guidance on posture, exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle to support overall function and prevent recurrence.

  • Yes, chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest nondrug, noninvasive forms of healthcare available for neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Licensed chiropractors undergo extensive training to identify risks and use techniques tailored to each patient.

Most patients experience relief or improved mobility. Some report mild, temporary soreness or stiffness (similar to post-workout feelings) that typically resolves within 24 hours. Serious complications are very rare. Chiropractors are trained to screen for contraindications and refer patients when needed.

  • Most adjustments are comfortable and cause little to no pain. The goal is to restore proper joint motion with a quick, controlled force (often using hands or an instrument).

Some people feel mild soreness afterward—especially after the first visit or if muscles are tight—which usually fades quickly. Chiropractors can modify techniques (gentle, low-force, or instrument-assisted options) based on your comfort level, age, or condition. Always communicate any concerns or preferences with your chiropractor.

  • Chiropractors complete rigorous education comparable to other primary care providers. This typically includes:

    • Undergraduate pre-medical studies (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.)
    • 4–5 years of chiropractic college (minimum ~4,200 hours)
    • Coursework in anatomy, physiology, neurology, orthopedics, radiology, diagnosis, nutrition, and adjusting techniques
    • Clinical internships and multiple national board exams

They earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree and must be licensed by the state. Many pursue additional postgraduate training in specialties.

  • In most cases, no. Chiropractors are direct-access primary care providers, meaning you can schedule an appointment directly without a referral from a medical doctor.

However, some insurance plans or specific health conditions may have requirements—check with your insurance provider or the chiropractic office. Many people self-refer for back/neck pain, headaches, or wellness care.

    Bonus tips:

    • A typical first visit includes a health history, physical exam (orthopedic/neurologic tests), and discussion of findings and a care plan. X-rays or imaging are used selectively when clinically indicated.
    • Treatment length varies—some people feel improvement in a few visits, while others need a short course or ongoing maintenance depending on their condition and goals.
    • Most major insurance plans, Medicare, and workers’ compensation cover chiropractic care (coverage details vary).
